MOVIES COMING OUT ON CHRISTMAS 2020: STREAMING GUIDE

On December 25, practically every major streaming service will be releasing a blockbuster movie (just call it the Streaming Super Bowl). By far the most high-profile release is Wonder Woman 1984 on HBO Max, but fans should also make it a point to catch Soul on Disney+ and Sylvie’s Love on Amazon Prime Video.

For what it’s worth, Netflix is among the services that do not have a movie coming out on Christmas Day 2020 (Shonda Rhimes’ Bridgerton series, however, will be streaming December 25!). Instead, Netflix will be dropping its two biggest movie releases earlier in the week, with Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom — Chadwick Boseman’s final film — debuting December 18, and George Clooney’s The Midnight Sky hitting December 23.

HOW TO WATCH THE NEW MOVIES COMING OUT ON CHRISTMAS

When it comes to the streaming releases, it’s pretty easy to watch them on Christmas Day. Fans can watch Wonder Woman 1984 on HBO Max via a variety of different devices (now including Roku!); the same goes for Soul on Disney+ and Sylvie’s Love on Amazon Prime Video.

Things are a bit trickier when it comes to the theatrical releases. Promising Young Woman, News of the World, and Pinocchio are only available in select theaters on December 25, so you’ll have to check your local listings to see if each film is playing near you. Truffle Hunters will be even more difficult for casual viewers to find, as Sony is only giving it a limited release before its March 5, 2021 U.S. premiere.

CAN I STREAM PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN?

As of now, you cannot stream Promising Young Woman. However, due to a new agreement between Universal (the studio behind Focus Features’ Promising Young Woman) and AMC, films can now be released on VOD just 17 days after they premiere in theaters. This means that Promising Young Woman could be available to stream as early as January 11, which would be 17 days after December 25 — and considering that the dark comedy premieres December 23 in certain theaters, it could be even earlier.
