ATLANTA — The U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution Tuesday evening asking Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove President Donald Trump from office.

Georgia’s Congressional delegation split along party lines on the resolution with all eight Republicans voting “No” and each of the six Democrats voting “Yes.”

Republican Congressmen Jody Hice, Barry Loudermilk, Rick Allen, Buddy Carter, Drew Ferguson, Andrew Clyde and Austin Scott all opposed the resolution. Reps. Lucy McBath, Carolyn Bourdeaux, David Scott, Nikema Williams, Sanford Bishop and Hank Johnson — all Democrats — supported the measure.

The resolution passed the House 223-205 with Illinois congressman and frequent Trump critic Adam Kinzinger being the lone Republican to join Democrats in approving the measure. Five members did not vote. The resolution states that Trump “widely advertised and broadly encouraged” protests that led to last week’s violence and insurrection at the Capitol building, according to a report from NPR. It urges Pence to invoke his powers to declare Trump unfit for office “immediately” and assume all powers and responsibility of the presidency.

“The results of the president’s rhetoric have left five Americans dead,” McBath said from the House floor. “Our response to anyone who seeks to overthrow the will of the people must be unwavering and resolute ... President trump’s actions warrant his immediate removal from office.”

Taylor Greene condemned the violence that took place at the Capital on Jan. 6, and said Trump did, too. But the Republican congresswoman said Democrats were guilty of stoking and supporting violence after protests of the police killing of George Floyd turned to rioting.

“I have 83 pages here of businesses that had property damages … were burned through the Minnesota riots,” she said. “Our Vice President-elect Kamala Harris posted the Minnesota Freedom Fund bail link encouraging people to donate money to bail criminals out of jail. We shouldn’t be hypocrites

"The majority is asking the House to assume a power it does not have," Cole said, pointing to the power of invoking the 25th Amendment that lies with "the vice president and Cabinet alone."

If Pence does not respond to the resolution within 24 hours, according to several reports, leaders in the House plan to begin impeachment proceedings.

If that occurs, Trump would become the first president in United States history to be impeached a second time. To be removed, he will need to be convicted by the Senate.

House members met until a recess was called just before 11:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday evening.

As of Tuesday evening Trump was eight days away from the end of his term, with President-elect Joe Biden set to become America’s 46th president on Jan. 20.

The House session will resume at 9 a.m. on Wednesday morning.
