Why President Trump is in danger of being impeached

Proceedings to impeach President Trump entered the public phase Wednesday, with testimony before the House Intelligence Committee.

At the heart of the issue is Trump’s July 25 phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, during which Trump asked Zelensky to open an investigation into Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son Hunter over Hunter’s high-paid job as a consultant to Burisma, Ukraine’s largest natural gas producer.

Trump also is accused of pressuring Zelensky to dig into corruption and alleged interference in the 2016 US presidential election.

The phone call is the subject of a whistleblower complaint from August.

Democrats have accused Trump of quid pro quos involving holding up military aid to Ukraine and a meeting at the White House for the new Ukraine president in exchange for the investigations he requested.

Trump has denied the allegations, describing the phone call as “perfect.”
