One man is in custody after an RCMP vehicle was rammed by a stolen vehicle in Airdrie on Thursday.
According to police, the marked cruiser was intentionally rammed by a burgundy Ford F-250 pickup truck in a No Frills parking lot at around 4:35 p.m.
“When the driver saw police behind him, he put the truck into drive, drove between two police cars and rear-ended a third,” RCMP said Sunday.
“The suspect then drove over a median at a high rate of speed and headed south on Highway 2.”
Calgary police said they took over the investigation once the vehicle was inside Calgary city limits, with HAWCS helicopter assisting in the chase.
According to police, the truck was heading south on Deerfoot Trail. When Calgary police started closing in, the suspect ditched the truck in Bridgeland and took off on a bike that was in the back of the pickup, police said.
Police said the man was taken down by the tactical team.
There were no injuries to any officers, Calgary police said. However, RCMP said an RCMP officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries and is at home recovering.
RCMP said Sunday that Alin Alexander Daoud, 39, of Airdrie, had been charged with 11 offences, including:
- dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm
- assaulting a police officer while resisting arrest
- flight from a police officer in a vehicle
- possession of stolen property over $5,000
Daoud is scheduled to appear in Calgary Provincial Court on Nov. 6 and Airdrie Provincial Court on Nov. 7.
