ALAMEDA COUNTY, CA — Friday, health officials with Alameda County reported 1,401 total cases of the coronavirus and 48 deaths.

Of the 1,401 confirmed cases of the virus, 81 patients are ill enough that they have had to be hospitalized. 37 of those are in the ICU for critical care.

Friday's numbers represent an increase of less than 50 new cases over the past 24 hours, which health experts say is due in part towards the stay-at-home order and effective social distancing. The county is trying to step up their testing, with a focus on testing health care workers and vulnerable populations for the virus first. The county's updated list of current coronavirus testing sites and the populations they serve can be found here.

Parks ask visitors to bring face coverings

Five counties across the Bay Area, including Alameda county, have joined together to issue a "Cover Your Face" order.

The order asks that everyone visiting a park bring a face mask, and wear it at any time they're within six feet of someone else. Parks say that includes when visitors are running, hiking and biking.

The mask requirements include areas near or just outside the parks, like in parking lots, staging areas and entrance gates.

The order does not apply to children under 12, and children 2 or younger should never wear a face mask because of the risk of suffocation.

Business donate to help feed hungry Alameda County residents

East Bay Community Energy has teamed up with several businesses to donate a total of $142,500 to the Alameda Community Food Bank and Meals-on-Wheels of Alameda County.

The food bank says that's good news, because there is a critical need for supplies right now amid the coronavirus outbreak. Executive Director of Alameda County Community Food Bank Suzan Bateson says they're seeing 10 times the normal number of calls to their emergency food helpline, more than half of which are coming from homes that have never needed food support before.

The food bank and meals on wheels are continuing to accept donations, and are encouraging anyone who can give to do so during the pandemic.
