His gun was gone in 60 seconds.
An NYPD cop lost his pistol after he allegedly used it to bash in a window of a stolen vehicle during a botched car stop in Queens, sources with knowledge of the case said Saturday.
Both the stolen grey Nissan Altima and the gun were recovered a short distance away, but the car thief remained at large Saturday, sources said.
The officer had pulled over the Altima, which had been reported stolen, on 110th St. near Jamaica Ave. in Richmond Hill at about 3 p.m.
The cop was trying to get into the car and pull the motorist out when he used the butt of his firearm to shatter the window, sources said.
When the window broke, he accidentally dropped the gun, which landed somewhere in the back seat, sources said.
At the same time, the motorist sped off, taking the gun with him. He abandoned vehicle and pistol a few blocks away, cops said. The NYPD did not identify the officer.
Police were investigating the incident Saturday. It was not immediately disclosed if the officer was facing disciplinary charges.
