Now better known for its lake and wildlife reserve, the Tower Hill volcano is a scenic backdrop to 57 Lowery Rd, Crossley.

By backdrop, we mean the volcano crater drops off behind the back fence.

And, in good news for your insurance bill, while it’s the fifth most recently active volcano in the state, it hasn’t erupted in 25,000 years.

Roberts Port Fairy agent Paul Ross said he doubted many people would be worried about swapping waterfront views for a lava-front vista at the five-bedroom home any time soon.

“But it’s on the crater of the volcano, so it has nice views and lots of wildlife, and ocean views as well,” Mr Ross said.

Views don’t come much rarer than this.

And the vista is just as good from the inside.

And a recent acknowledgment of the region’s tourist appeal meant people activity was red hot, even if volcanic activity was not.

“Tourism has erupted in the area since Port Fairy was named Australia’s best town by Wotif,” Mr Ross said.

At $739,000, the asking price is just above Melbourne’s $710,750 median house price.

Although you’d be lucky to get five bedrooms under $750,000 anywhere in Melbourne.

And with timber beams sourced from Echuca Wharf, the house is as unique as its location.

“It is fairly impressive as you walk through it,” Mr Ross said.

“It’s pretty cool.”

The peaked roofline provides for a lofty feel throughout the home.

While it was possible the home would continue as a farm stay, some might look to buy it as a lifestyle getaway, Mr Ross said.

Most of the buyers in the area were relocating from Melbourne, Ballarat or Geelong — with some also moving from nearby Warrnambool.

No. 71 next door sold recently for $725,000, but otherwise sales on the edge of the crater are few and far between.

“There are a few properties up there, but it is a little bit unique,” Mr Ross said.

“Others sell in the area, but not directly backing on to the volcano. Historically it’s pretty tightly held up there.”
