“Beach Blanket Babylon” and the Steve Silver Foundation awarded their traditional Scholarship for the Arts to three local high school seniors, from a pool of nine finalists, following a live competition before a panel of celebrity judges on Monday, June 3, at Club Fugazi.

Kyleigh Colchico of Concord’s Clayton Valley Charter High School won in the dance category, performing to “Leave a Light On.” Dante Cokinos of Novato High School triumphed in the acting category with a monologue from Dominique Morisseau’s “Pipeline.” Armand Akbari of Atherton’s Sacred Heart Preparatory came in first in the singing category, performing “Later” from Stephen Sondheim’s “A Little Night Music.”

Each winner takes home a $15,000 check. “Beach Blanket Babylon” and the Steve Silver Foundation have been awarding the scholarships since 2002. In that time, the fund has given more than half a million dollars to local students with aspirations of studying the performing arts in college.

Although “Beach Blanket Babylon” will conclude its staggering 45-year run on New Year’s Eve, producer Jo Schuman Silver said in a statement that the scholarship “will continue in some form.”

This year’s celebrity panelists included singer-songwriter Tracy Chapman, comedian Will Durst, philanthropist Gordon Getty, Q102.1’s Chuy Gomez, actor Suzanne Grodner of the national tour of “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical,” opera composer Jake Heggie, SFJazz’s Randall Kline, YBCA’s Jonathan Moscone, ODC’s Brenda Way and singer Paula West.
