It was supposed to be a prop, but it wound up being deadly.

Country singer Justin Carter was shot to death in Texas with a gun that was being used as a prop for a music video, local news outlets reported Thursday.

The apparent accidental shooting took place in Carter’s own apartment in Woodlands, north of Houston, on Saturday, according to ABC 11.

Details of the accident have not been released, but an employee with Carter’s agency, Triple Threat Management, told the station that the gun was ultimately going to be used in the video. Police did not immediately return a request for information.

Carter, 35, was born and raised in Texas and is described as “a country boy to his core” on his website.

“Although he just got his start, he’s rising up fast!” a short biography on his website reads.

Carter had recently released two new songs and a music video, and he was working on a new album, according to his Facebook page, which now includes posts from his family.

The singer was influenced by Garth Brooks, Clay Walker, George Strait and other country legends.

“Justin’s passion is derived from the sound of old country, and he clings to that feeling he gets when he hears it and tries to push that into his music,” the online bio states. “Times are changing and so are the (generation’s) taste in music, but Justin tries to keep a happy medium between both old and new to satisfy everyone.”
