Sen. Tim Scott addressed Monday whether he would be the first bachelor in recent history to land in the White House on the heels of his presidential announcement.
The South Carolina Republican, 57, fielded the question about his love life during a sit-down interview with NBC News after launching his 2024 presidential campaign at his alma mater, Charleston Southern University, where he boasted about his own American success story.
Scott later delved into his personal life while talking to NBC News senior national correspondent Tom Llamas who broached the fact the 57-year-old has never been married.
“There’s a question America would love for you to answer,” Llamas said. “If you become president you’d be like Grover Cleveland and James Buchanan, you would — you’d go as a bachelor, as a single man.
“Is there someone in your life – is there time for a woman in your life right?”
Scott didn’t reveal much — but appeared to imply that anything is possible.
“Oh, there’s always – there’s always time for – a great relationship with a wonderful woman. And I thank God that that is happening,” Scott said.
“But – so I’ll leave it there.”
President Cleveland entered the presidency as a bachelor, but later married Frances Folsom in a small White House ceremony in June 1886.
He’s the only president to get married while in office. He served from 1885 to 1889 and then for a second term from 1893 to 1897.
President Buchanan was the only president who never married. He served from 1857 to 1861.
Scott, a US senator since 2013, joins ex-President Donald Trump, former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley, former Arkansas governor Asa Hutchinson, tech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, among others who have declared their intention to seek the GOP nomination and face President Joe Biden in the general election.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is expected to formally announce his run for president in the coming days.
