"He has been at the heart of our family for the past nine years and we will miss him so much. - W & C."

The post has since been flooded with comments from royal fans saying how sorry they were to hear about the Cambridges' loss.

Lupo, a black Cocker Spaniel, has been part of the Cambridge family since 2011. Lupo's mother was James Middleton's dog, Ella – and he was brother to three more of James' pets – as Kate's younger brother revealed in his own Instagram tribute to the royal hound.

"It is with great sadness that Lupo, the beloved dog of my sister, Catherine, and her family has passed away," James wrote in the accompanying caption. "Lupo was the son of Ella, brother to Zulu, Inka & Luna. He was 9 years old."

It is not known how or why Lupo passed away. Sending our heartfelt condolences to the Cambridges on the loss of their family pet.
