MEMA discontinues emergency alerts app

MEMA alerts

MEMA is discontinuing its Massachusetts Alerts App.

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency is discontinuing its smartphone app.

Massachusetts Alerts had provided location-based alerts of warnings from the National Weather Service and other emergencies.

Christoper Besse, a spokesman for MEMA, said only 36,000 people were enrolled in the app – a relatively low number considering the state’s population of nearly 7 million.

“As technology for emergency alerts continues to improve, including Wireless Emergency Alerts issued by the National Weather Service for weather warnings, MEMA is rethinking its public alert and warning tools,” Besse said in an email. “We continue to actively communicate and broadcast weather alerts and other critical information through the suite of social media platforms.”

A notification put out by Massachusetts Alerts directs users to the ping4alerts! App for similar weather warnings. Users can also visit MEMA’s website mass.gov/mema or follow the agency on Twitter @massEMA.
