Arctic blast headed for Alabama late this weekend

The coldest air of the winter is forecast to arrive in Alabama by late this weekend.

Temperatures could possibly fall into the single digits in north Alabama late Sunday into Monday morning, with teens and 20s expected all the way into south Alabama, according to the National Weather Service.

And there could be a snow flurry or two thrown in the mix late Saturday as well, but there won't be many and it's not expected to accumulate, forecasters said.

A cold front is forecast to move into the state on Saturday, bringing widespread rain.

It is expected to be warm before the front moves through. Here's a look at highs expected on Saturday, which are on the warm side for this time of year:

Afterward, much colder arctic air will spill southward into Alabama, and temperatures will plummet accordingly.

Temperatures on Sunday behind the front may not crack the freezing point in north Alabama. Central Alabama will have mid-30s and the warm spot, south Alabama, will get highs in the mid-40s to 50s.

It will also be windy behind the front, which will make it feel even colder.

But it's Monday morning that will be the real deal as far as the cold goes.

Lows in the single digits are not out of the question on Sunday night into Monday morning for north Alabama. Teens could be widespread across central Alabama, and south Alabama will hover in the 20s.

Could it go even lower? The weather service will closely be watching the winds to see.

Calmer winds overnight could allow temperatures to fall farther than forecast.

There is a bright spot. The weather service said that the sun should show up on Monday and help to moderate temperatures a little bit, with increasingly warmer temperatures expected going into next week.
