Zooey Deschanel has paid tribute to her former co-star Ed Asner, following his death.

On Sunday, August 29, Asner – who has featured in titles such as Lou Grant, The Good Wife, Dead to Me and Disney Pixar's Up – passed away in his Los Angeles home, surrounded by his family. He was 91 years old.

Two days later, Deschanel took to Instagram to share a photo of Asner dressed as Santa Claus in Elf, the Will Ferrell-led festive film they appeared in together back in 2003.

"Rest In Peace my favorite Santa Claus," she wrote alongside the promo shot. "You will be so missed."

"He's a legend," one fan added, as another typed: "Been watching him since I was a little kid, staying up late watching Mary Tyler Moore reruns. He will be missed."

Asner's nearest and dearest announced to fans that he had died on Twitter, taking to the Hollywood legend's account to state:"We are sorry to say that our beloved patriarch passed away this morning peacefully. Words cannot express the sadness we feel. With a kiss on your head – Goodnight Dad. We love you."

Deschanel isn't the only one who took to social media to pay her respects to Asner, either. His on-screen Cobra Kai son William Zabka wrote on Twitter: "Devastated to hear this news. What a legend. What a beautiful human and special friend. I learned so much from him. My love and deepest condolences to the Asner family #RIP Dear Ed."

"So saddened by this news," Ralph Macchio added. "A legend and icon in the acting world. Endless respect for his body of work on so many levels. Ed had graced the Cobra Kai series and am grateful to have had a moment or two to meet and connect with him. An absolute privilege. #RIPEdAsner."
