NYC musician outrages French festival for cursing out Macron onstage

Pardon his French.

A Manhattan musician caused a stir by cursing out President Emmanuel Macron live onstage at a French music festival attended by the world leader.

Organizers of the Touquet Music Beach Festival in northern France were so incensed when the French-American Marc Rebillet slammed Macron as an “ass—” and a “motherf—er” during his performance last week, they demanded he return his paycheck for the gig.

Although Macron didn’t arrive till after the profanity-laced tirade, festival organizers were outraged and cut off Rebillet’s sound during the performance, he claimed to his 1.7 million Instagram followers.

“I insulted (Macron) on stage – not very unusual. I’ve done it before, several times,” Rebillet said on social media. “The president of the festival threw an entire drink on my promoter mid set, side stage, and now they want their money back for the performance that I finished because they didn’t like what I said.”

During a 2019 concert, Rebillet publicly denounced Macron’s failure on increasing minimum wages and other issues.

Infuriated by the onstage stunt, Festival director France Leduc told the La Voix Du Nord newspaper, Rebillet had essentially “held the Le Touquet festival hostage to make a buzz.”

Touquet mayor Daniel Fasquelle also took offense to Rebillet, tweeting, “Being an artist does not excuse everything. He exceeded the limits several times yesterday by gratuitously and rudely insulting Macron. I ask the organizers to draw the necessary conclusions and ensure that he is no longer invited.”

Other than not being invited back, Rebillet will likely not face any legal fallout. While insults are taken seriously in France and come with the risk of a 12,000-euro fine, speech in an artistic environment is highly protected.
