Historic Garden Park School will open for first time in 50 years
The Historic Garden Park School will host an open house in con junction with Fremont Fall Heritage Days. The event will be from 1-4 p.m. Oct. 6 and 7. The schoolhouse will be open for the first time in more than 50 years. See the historic preservation efforts that have been ongoing for more than a decade and learn about the best that is yet to come. This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. The old school building is located about 10 miles north of Cañon City along Garden Park Road.
VFW offers Voice of Democracy scholarship and Patriot’s Pen essay contest
The Veterans of Foreign War and Auxiliary, Post 4061, announce the 2018 Voice of Democracy scholarship and Patriot’s Pen essay contest.
The VOD is open to students in grades 9-12 who are enrolled in a public, private or parochial high school or home school program. The VOD audio-essay programs provides high school students with the unique opportunity to express themselves in regards to a democratic and patriotic-themed recorded essay. The national winner receives a $30,000 award and every state winner receives $1,000 and an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. There are other awards, as well. The state and national scholarship awards are paid to the college/trade school that the student will be attending. Monetary awards and recognition is also given at the post, district and state level.
A student writes and records a 3-5 minute speech and records it on an audio CD or flash drive. The recording has to be in the student’s voice and in English. No music, singing, poetry or sound effects are allowed. Hearing/speech impaired students should email the Voice of Democracy National Office at youthscholarships-at-the-vfw.org for special instructions. The theme for this year’s contest is: “Why My Voice Counts.”
The deadline for turning in the application and recorded essay to the VFW Post, 215 N. Cottonwood Ave., is Oct. 31. Applications are available at the post (open Wednesday mornings and Friday nights), at your school or can be downloaded at VFW.org.

Additionally, the Patriot’s Pen essay contest is open to all students in grades 6-8. The National Award is $5000 and the state award is $500. Monetary and recognition awards are also given at the Post, District and State levels. The theme for 2018, 300-400 word essay is: “Why I Honor the American Flag.” The application and essay deadline is Oct. 31. It must be at the VFW Post or in the hands of a VFW essay chairman by midnight of that deadline.
