Former Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam MP Vasanthi Stanley died in Chennai on Saturday night after a brief illness. She was undergoing treatment in a private hospital. She was 56 years old.

Vasanthi Stanley was a Rajya Sabha member representing the DMK from 2008- 2014.

She also held various positions in Rajya Sabha committees.

Vasanthi Stanley, who hailed from Srivilliputhur, is survived by her adopted son.

Poet Ilayabharathi, a close friend of Vasanthi Stanley, said “She wanted to participate in the election campaign for DMK’s Lok Sabha candidate M.K. Kanimozhi in Thoothukudi but her health did not allow her to do so. She also wanted to see a recording of Ms. Kanimozhi’s campaign. I recently met her.”
