The 6ix god, a.k.a Drake, may not have gotten the chance to finish his acceptance speech at the 2019 Grammys Sunday night, but he did get one wish granted by the city that loves him most.
When asked backstage if he had anything else to say, the Toronto rapper had a pointed message for the mayor of Toronto, John Tory.
“Yeah, yeah, yeah,” said the rapper, grabbing the Entertainment Tonight reporter’s microphone. “I wanna say the Mayor of Toronto needs to turn the CN Tower gold tomorrow — chrome and gold, are you stupid, are you dumb?”
Well as the saying goes, ask and you shall receive.
Mayor John Tory is apparently neither stupid or dumb to pass up on the 6ix god’s request — and he outdid himself twice over.
The CN Tower put out this tweet on Monday:
“Tonight we’re going gold to celebrate the outstanding artists whose work makes Canada shine so brightly on the world stage. Congratulations to the nominees and winners at the 2019 Grammys! @drake @RecordingAcad @ETCanada”
Then Tory upped the ante tweeting the Toronto sign at Nathan Phillips Square will also be going gold Monday night, to celebrate Drake’s win for Best Rap Song, ‘God’s Plan’:
“Hey @Drake, congrats on the #Grammys win! The Toronto sign will be gold tonight to celebrate.”
During his acceptance speech for Best Rap Song, the former Degrassi actor took the opportunity to encourage aspiring artists and referenced being a hero in one’s hometown.
