Northern Virginia Weather: Hazardous Outlook Issued

With heavy rains approaching, the National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for the Northern Virginia area.

STERLING, VA—A brief respite from the rain comes to a soggy end Thursday for folks in the Northern Virginia area, with downpours on the way. Not only that, but the National Weather Service has issued a flood watch from 7 p.m. Thursday through 6 p.m. Friday.

From the NWS: "Soils remain saturated due to recent rainfall, so excess runoff from the rain will cause the potential for flooding of small streams, creeks, and urban areas." If there's a bright spot, it's that temperatures will climb through the period. Friday's highs should be in the 60s.

And then? There's this, as pointed out by the Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang: "The rain is finished by Saturday, but then comes the wind. As the storm's low-pressure center races north into New England, the winds behind it may gust near 40 to 50 mph from the west, which could bring down some trees given the wet soil."
