Gov. Andrew Cuomo “did not mean to grope” a woman when he allegedly ran his fingers across her chest while touching the letters on a shirt she was wearing, his personal defense lawyer said Tuesday — shortly before Cuomo’s surprise resignation.
Lawyer Rita Glavin also challenged the account of the alleged incident in Attorney General Letitia James’ explosive sexual harassment report against Cuomo because it doesn’t include photos of him putting his hand on Virginia Liammitis, a spokeswoman for the National Grid energy company.
“She claims that as he went through the rope line, he touched the logo on her shirt, which was her energy company logo, as he was greeting her,” Glavin said.
“The governor did not mean to grope her.”
Glavin made similar claims about a state worker who accused Cuomo of grabbing her but while they posed for a photo.
“If he touched her rear end, he certainly didn’t mean to do it,” she said.
Glavin’s jaw-dropping assertions came during a 45-minute news conference in Cuomo’s Manhattan office, where she ramped up her attacks on some of the 11 women who testified about the alleged misconduct that had threatened to result in his all-but-certain impeachment by the state Assembly.
