CANTON, GA — A bus driver in Cherokee County has died from the coronavirus, the school district said Monday.

Cherokee County Schools Chief Communications Officer Barbara Jacoby said the district cannot release specific medical information per privacy laws protecting employees. She was able to confirm that a 63-year-old Cherokee County Schools bus driver was hospitalized after becoming ill with the coronavirus during the latter part of winter break and died on Thursday.

"He had served CCSD for the past three years with dedication and excellence and will be missed by his students and colleagues and all who knew him," Jacoby said in a statement to Patch.

The district sent a letter to the parents of students on his Creekview zone bus routes to let them know of his passing.

"We continue to ask everyone in our community to follow best practices to protect themselves and their neighbors from COVID-19 including social distancing and mask usage, which is required for our employees and expected of our students," Jacoby said. "If you are experiencing symptoms and/or have had close contact with someone who is positive, please stay home, seek testing and follow quarantine rules."
