Plane Lands At Newark With Multiple Flat Tires; Skids Off Runway

NEWARK, NJ — Flight operations have resumed at Newark Airport Saturday after a United Airlines flight experienced multiple flat tires upon landing at the New Jersey airport and then skidded off the runway, officials said.

A Port Authority spokesperson told Patch that planes are once again arriving and departing the airport but the airport is not operating at normal capacity. The spokesperson said there will be delays.

In a statement, the FAA said the United Airlines flight landed at 1 p.m. on and skidded off the left side of the pavement. According to the FAA, the plane's left main landing gear is stuck in a grassy field.

Passengers were safely deplaned from the disabled aircraft.

In a statement, United Airlines said authorities are working "expeditiously" to remove the disabled aircraft.

However, the National Transportation Safety Board has said that the plane should not be moved till investigators arrive.

"United flight 627 from Denver to Newark, New Jersey experienced multiple flat tires upon landing in Newark," United said in the statement. "After landing, the aircraft became disabled which is currently affecting operations at Newark Airport. For those on the flight, we arranged transport for passengers from the aircraft to the airport terminal and paramedics were on site as a precaution.

"We’re in close touch with the FAA and airport authorities and are working expeditiously to safely remove the disabled aircraft so that operations at the airport can return to normal."

The FAA said no injuries have been reported. A total of 166 passengers were on board. No passengers had to be taken to the hospital and those who suffered minor injuries refused medical treatment.

No planes were arriving or departing from Newark Airport after the plane made the landing.
