The second phase of Lafayette’s Smart Water Meter project has begun.
In May, the city’s public works department began to manage a city-wide project to replace existing residential water meters with new smart water meters.
The new equipment will be able to provide real-time water usage data, allow residents to identify possible water leaks, assist property owners to make informed choices on how much water to use and reduce labor costs for the city.
The project will continue through January.
During the first phase, the Utility Metering Solutions team collected GPS data of residential water meters.
The second phase is scheduled for August through December, and will have the Utility Metering Solutions team begin the installation and replacement of the residential water meters. Residents’ meters will be upgraded or programmed during the second phase, according to the city.
The installation will take between 30 and 60 minutes, in which the water will be shut off for 15-20 minutes. Work will be performed between 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Appointments will not be made for the work, but property owners may find a door hanger will be left at the main entrance to let residents know of the status of the visit.
In phase three, a customer engagement portal will be planned and budgeted for mid-to late 2020. Residents will be able to see the water usage data while using a mobile app or a computer. For more information about the project, visit cityoflafayette.com/smartmeter.
