Third Week - Friday's “Medfield Historical Minute”
A little something to read and learn to give you a little break during this time of boredom during isolation due to the Coronavirus Crisis.
A Medfield Historical Minute...
This "Medfield Historical Minute" is brought to you by town historian Richard DeSorgher.
A little something to read and learn to give you a little break during this time of boredom during isolation due to the Coronavirus Crisis.
A different "Medfield Historical Minute" will appear each day during the Crisis.
"Eliakim Morse of Main Street petitioned the town to pay him for expenses in caring for Joseph Brooks, who served as a soldier in Colonel Saltonstall’s regiment, stationed at Crown Point, New York, during the French and Indian War. Brooks was a Native-American boy who was brought up in Medfield by Morse. On November 20, 1760 Morse was ordered to come and get Brooks who had small-pox. It took Mores two weeks to get Brooks back to Medfield. Sadly, Brooks died soon after. Morse’s charges for doctoring, nursing, loss of bedding, etc., amounted to 9 pounds and 15 shillings. The court ordered Medfield to pay Morse 7 pounds for those expenses. Brooks was taken to the place in Rocky Woods called “the graves,’ where he was buried. This location was the site where several Medfield Native-Americans and African-Americans were buried during this time."
