‘60 Minutes’ Correspondent Bill Whitaker To Guest Host ‘Jeopardy!’ Starting On May 3

Bill Whitaker, the veteran journalist and 60 Minutes correspondent, will be bringing his A-game as guest host of Jeopardy! starting tonight (May 3). Whitaker will be the seventh such guest host to stand at the podium as the search for a replacement for Alex Trebek continues.

Whitaker joined CBS News as a reporter in 1984 and has been a correspondent for 60 Minutes since 2014. In a recent interview about his role as guest-host, Whitaker explains that he never expected the Jeopardy! gig to receive the level of attention that it has. “I have been really blown away by the coverage this all gets. I truly did think, silly me, that I was going to be a Jeopardy! guest host and carry on with my life as usual, but these hosts: They’re gossiped about, they’re tweeted about, they’re in People magazine, the Hollywood Reporter. I’m going, ‘Oh my God, I had no idea that this was going to be this wild and crazy.'”

In an interview with the Washington Post, Whitaker also revealed lots of solid information about how the Jeopardy! sausage gets made, from the absolute secrecy of rehearsals, the number of shows he filmed in a day (as with all of the guest hosts, Whitaker will host ten shows over two weeks, and he filmed five per day over two days), and the lingo that the hosts are required to know and use throughout the game. While some celebrities, like LeVar Burton, are actively campaigning to be the permanent host of the game show, Whitaker says his stint was merely “a change of pace” from his day job.
