Can you believe the year is nearly over, folks? As life slows down for a moment and you light the candles, roast the turkey or vegetarian equivalent, and spend time with family (chosen or otherwise), the stars stay forever in motion as we astrologers stare up at them each night. This week, we look ahead to the new moon in Sagittarius. Occurring at one degree and 38 seconds, the new moon in Sagittarius will arrive Tuesday, November 23, 2022 at 5:57 p.m. (EST), according to NASA’s sky events calendar.

Before we start digging more into November’s impending new moon, it seems appropriate to ask you Allure readers out there: How are you all doing? Now we’ve closed out a rather hectic eclipse season — one that likely hit some folks quite hard — are we all keeping calm and carrying on or positively panicking about the upcoming holiday season? (If it’s simple shopping advice you seek, there’s a gift guide for that; if it’s advice on setting boundaries with difficult family members, well, we’ve got one for that, too.) But enough about the holiday season drama. Thankfully, the eclipses are over and we can look forward to a lovely new moon in Sagittarius. What does it mean for all of us?

In This Story:

What Is the Meaning of November 23’s New Moon in Sagittarius?

First, let’s talk about Sag as a sign: A defining feature of Sagittarius is how it approaches the world with a particular kind of curiosity. Sagittarius signs can get into a conversation with nearly anyone and find something interesting or unique in almost every situation. They have a thirst for knowledge, as shown in their love of traveling to adventurous places and learning new skills.

Things aren’t all sunshine and roses, though: Notorious sticklers for the truth, Sags cannot stand hypocrisy, dishonesty, or white lies that bend the facts. (As a Sagittarius rising, I feel comfortable noting that this trait is also what makes us such awful liars, by the way.) Because of the emphasis placed on truthfulness and how highly we value the veracity of what we say — and we’re being told by others — Sagittariuses are also known for being dogmatic, self-righteous, sometimes even rude. A word of advice: If you don’t want candor and sincerity in the responses you receive, you may not want to consult a Sagittarius about a sticky situation.

As a reminder, the new moon is a time of new beginnings — a chance to not merely accept, but to embrace the uncertainty and mysteriousness of what’s to come. Therefore, a new moon in Sagittarius is a natural fit, as this sign always wants to go somewhere new. With all this Sagittarius energy in the air, this could be a time when you find yourself no longer wanting to please people. Maybe you just want to do your thing — and there’s nothing wrong with that. Try going to a museum or cultural event, regardless of whether you can find someone to go with, or take yourself out to a restaurant or bar. Maybe you’ll meet some new people and maybe you won’t, but you’ll have a great time in your own company either way. Plus, this unmistakable energy in the sky could manifest as a meet-cute (platonic or otherwise) with a spontaneous Sagittarius soul who opens your eyes to new ideas.

What Is a Stellium?

In addition to this new moon appearing in the sign of the truth-seeking optimist, we can also see Mercury and Venus there. This is called a stellium, which happens when three or more planetary bodies are in the same sign. This makes the Sagittarian energy of the new moon even more potent because the sun (creative life force), the moon (emotions), Venus (attraction), and Mercury (communication) are all speaking the same language.

So, not that you needed another invitation, but as your resident astrologer, I'll leave you with this: These Sagittarius planets want to party, and they’re inviting you along for the ride.

A Minor Grand Trine With the New Moon

This is a lovely new moon to go out with friends, go to a party, go to a show. We have a minor grand trine between the new moon in Sag, Pluto in late degrees of Capricorn, and Jupiter in late degrees of Pisces. Jupiter has gone back into Pisces (its own sign) and is feeling expansive and spiritual, and with Jupiter and Neptune in Pisces, we can touch the divine and feel deeply connected to the spirit of the universe. Jupiter making an out-of-sign trine with the new moon can bring inspiration and knowledge from your higher self. Since it is a new moon, it is not a time to do anything with the information, just to notice — and record it — in some way. Pluto in Capricorn is also sextiling the new moon, lending some weight to the occasion.

While this new moon does want to have fun (cue the lunar Cyndi Lauper cover), the preponderance of Sag planets and the Pluto connection means that, once again, we are also looking for meaning and answers to life. Explore and enjoy whatever you’re doing; take the pressure off yourself and give yourself wholly to whatever sets your soul aflame without worrying about where it will lead.

What Is the Significance of Eclipse Season Ending?

Circling back to our relief for the end of a certain tumultuous time of year, let’s recap: We just had our eclipse season end with a partial solar eclipse in at two degrees of Scorpio on October 25, 2022, plus a lunar eclipse at 16 degrees and one second of Taurus on November 8, 2022. Eclipses are a time when change can happen suddenly and without warning. Many times, these can signal major endings — perhaps a relationship, a job, or even a certain way of being. But they also open portals to new possibilities and powerful cosmic energy.

These events are nearly always intense and powerful; considering Scorpio is frequently known to be the most intense sign of the zodiac, this eclipse may have been a particularly hard one. In a Scorpio eclipse, you might’ve faced the end of something significant, possibly even a death, or was confronted with something painful that you previously tried to ignore. To be frank, this is why the Taurus lunar eclipse was most likely a time spent still recovering from the Scorpio eclipse, perhaps interrogating and discovering a new truth for yourself relating to your sense of security, whether internally (your body and mind) and externally (your home, relationships, or career).

So, how will you spend this new moon? If you simply want to wing it, there's no shame — the planets would approve, after all.
