National Weather Service Investigating Possible Tornado In Mercer Co.

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – A powerful storm rolled through parts of Mercer County Tuesday evening, leaving much destruction in its wake. The National Weather Service will be in Lawrence Township and West Windsor to investigate whether a tornado touched down.

Powerful winds ripped trees off the ground and caused much damage to property.

In Lawrence Township, hail and high winds, caused extensive damage to the condominium complex of Lawrence Square Village, commercial buildings, and several vehicles, the police department said. More: Trees, Power Lines Down As Storm Causes Damage In Lawrence Township

Around 60 residents have been displaced, according to authorities. The Red Cross and Volunteers of America were on the scene, helping the displaced find temporary housing.

Trees were uprooted and knocked over. Utility lines were brought down, causing the closure of Route 1 in both directions, from Interstate 295 to Bakers Basin Road.

Downed trees also caused Quakerbridge Road to close in both directions.

In West Windsor, the police department received various calls from residents who reported trees falling on homes and downed power lines. No injuries were reported. More: Buildings Damaged, Trees Down After Storm Hits West Windsor

A team from the National Weather Service will be in the area to survey the damage and determine if indeed a tornado touched down.

A report from the NWS is expected around 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

Residents of Lawrence Square Village in need of assistance can meet with the Red Cross and Volunteers of America at the Club House located at 1 Reed Ct.

Residents who wish to report property damage to vehicles due to the storm should contact Lawrence Township Police non-emergency line at 609-896-1111 on Wednesday.
