Don’t let spring showers rain on your June parade. Designated as Great Outdoors Month, the Illinois Office of Tourism rounded up some ideas for the outdoorsy (and not-so-outdoorsy) types in hopes of coaxing residents and visitors alike to enjoy Mother Nature in Illinois. Whether you’re looking for a full-blown hike or a leisurely stroll through some city green space, there’s something for everyone.

Outdoorsy: A two-hour drive from Springfield, Harpole’s Heartland Lodge & Resort has ATV rentals for solo and group travelers who have the need for speed. Take an ATV to the trails in Nebo. The lodge also offers horseback riding, golfing and biking.

Outdoorsy: Within Shawnee National Forest (a five-hour drive from Chicago) lies Bell Smith Springs, which boasts natural rock formations, cliffs and streams. With names like Devil’s Backbone and Boulder Falls, you know the expansive locale is brining some hiking heat. Visitors can also check out a natural rock bridge.

Outdoorsy: For the extreme types, Three Oaks Recreation Area in Crystal Lake boasts Quarry Cable Park for water skiers and wakeboarders. Looking for something more chill? Beach volleyball, cornhole and live concerts make this park a prime spot to visit.

Less outdoorsy: Get a glimpse of Illinois River nature from the comfort of The Spirit of Peoria, a riverboat that takes travelers on a number of excursions, including day trips, overnight excursions and themed cruises.

Less outdoorsy: Enjoy farm-to-table fare in Champaign at Prairie Fruits Farm & Creamery. Menu items include microbrews, gelato and cheeses, as well as specialty cocktails matched to the dinner theme.

Less outdoorsy: Gaze at gorgeous greenery while listening to live music every Tuesday night during the summer months at Anderson Japanese Gardens in Rockford.
