Former Coronation Street star Irene Sutcliffe has died, aged 88.

Irene made her debut appearance on the cobbles back in 1968 as the long-suffering Maggie Clegg, who ran the corner shop.

Maggie also had to cope with her alcoholic husband Les Clegg (John Sharp) and adopted son Gordon (Bill Kenwright).

Unable to cope with her husband's heavy drinking, Maggie divorced Les and went on to marry Ron Cooke (Eric Lander) and the couple moved to live in Zaire for Ron's new job.

Irene was part of the soap until 1975 and starred in many scenes alongside the likes of Betty Driver (Betty Williams), Peter Adamson (Len Fairclough) and Pat Phoenix (Elsie Tanner).

Before her role on Corrie, Irene made her first acting appearance as the society girl Patricia in George Bernard Shaw's The Millionairess after training at prestigious drama school LAMDA.

Irene made a number of appearances on the theatre stage too, including Mark Medoff’s Children of a Lesser God and Agatha Christie's Murder Is Easy.

As for her other TV roles, Irene had parts in Doc Martin, Doctors and most recently played the King's Mother in The Royals.

Coronation Street airs at 9pm all this week on ITV.
