The Alabama Cooperative Extension System provides educational outreach to the citizens of Alabama on behalf of the state’s two land grant universities: Alabama A&M University and Auburn University.

“The Veterans Garden Project is a way to give the veteran community of the Wiregrass area out to have space where they can get their hands in the dirt and socialize with other veterans and their families,” Alabama Extension Agent Kerry Steedley said.

But why is it important that veterans have ssomething like this to do?

“I think veterans can really benefit from having a routine, a mission-driven project that they can come out and be in the company of other veterans and come out if it with a tangible product as a result of their hard work,” Steedley said.

“We have workshops about every 10 days, the next workshop is tomorrow, Wednesday, May 19, and then the next one will be Saturday, May 29th,” Steedley added. “And you can find more information on the Landmark Park website or the Alabama Cooperative Extension calendar of events.”

You do not have to pre-register to attend this event, and all people are welcome to come out and garden.

“You are welcome to show up and come with any experience or knowledge level that you have,” Steedley said. “So whether you are starting from the basics of gardening, or have a lot of experience, we would love to have you!”
