EAST HARLEM, NY — A massive new East Harlem development will be home to the neighborhood's newest supermarket, according to reports.

Food Bazaar, a supermarket with dozens of locations in the New York City area, has secured a 20-year lease to occupy a 45,885-square-foot, two-story space in the One East Harlem development on Third Avenue and East 125th Street, Real Estate Weekly first reported. Developers recently broke ground on the building, which will bring 400 apartments, retail space and 10,000-square-feet of public open space to East Harlem.

Construction of One East Harlem is expected to take two years, which means Food Bazaar likely won't open until at least 2021.

“This will be a game-changer for East Harlem as it brings a much-needed, large format grocery use to the corner of 125th Street and Third Avenue,” Mark Tergesen of the real estate firm ABS Partners, which represented Food Bazaar, told Real Estate Weekly.

Food Bazaar will be the latest large supermarket to open in East Harlem after years of supermarket closures. A Foodtown opened at the base of a new development on Third Avenue and East 121st Street in 2018. East Harlem lost a City Fresh supermarket in 2016 and a large PathMark supermarket on East 125th Street in 2015.
