President Trump’s new legal team is straight out of the Fox News studios.
Controversial constitutional lawyer Alan Dershowitz, former independent counsel Ken Starr and ex-Florida prosecutor Pam Bondi — all of whom are either contributors or frequent guests on the conservative news network — joined Trump’s Senate impeachment trial defense team on Friday.
Dershowitz, a longtime Harvard University professor who has recently made headlines over his representation of late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, tweeted out a third-person statement confirming he’ll take center stage at Trump’s trial, which is set to start in earnest with opening arguments Tuesday.
“Professor Dershowitz will present oral arguments at the Senate trial to address the constitutional arguments against impeachment and removal,” the statement read.
The missive cited Dershowitz’s vote for Hillary Clinton in 2016 and opposition to President Bill Clinton’s impeachment in 1998 as evidence that he’s “non partisan” and only taking on the Trump job “to defend the integrity of the Constitution.”
Dershowitz is a frequent Trump-boosting guest on Fox News and claims there was no solid legal grounds for impeaching the president over his attempts to shake down Ukraine for investigations into Joe Biden and other Democratic rivals.
Starr, a Fox News contributor who spearheaded the independent counsel investigation that resulted in Clinton’s impeachment, did not return a request for comment, but a person familiar with the matter said he had been tapped to join the Trump team as well.
A Fox News spokeswoman confirmed Starr had ended his Fox News contract in light of his new gig.
Bondi, another familiar face on Fox News, is set to join the Trump team as well, according to several reports.
The ex-Florida attorney general faced scrutiny after it was revealed that her office declined to investigate possible wrongdoing involving Trump’s since-shuttered foundation after he gave $25,000 to support her reelection bid.
Apparently not on Trump’s legal team is Rudy Giuliani, who weeks ago said he would “love to try the case” and be part of the presidential defense.
However, on Friday, Giuliani acknowledged he’s “a potential witness” in the impeachment trial, having played a prominent role in pressuring Ukrainian officials to open investigations that could prove politically beneficial to Trump.
“I will be warming up to testify,” Giuliani told the Daily News. “I am part of (Trump’s) team just not able to be part of trial team as a potential witness.”
Trump’s legal team will be led by White House counsel Pat Cipollone and top Trump personal lawyer Jay Sekulow.
Also expected to join the team is Robert Ray, who worked on Starr’s Clinton investigation team and co-wrote the final report on the ex-president’s sexual relationship with White House intern Monica Lewinsky.
Trump’s picks have been involved in some of the most high-profile court cases in recent American history and the appointments appear to suggest the president is looking to mount a rigorous defense against charges that he abused his power and obstructed Congress.
Even though the House impeached Trump on Dec. 18, new evidence of his Ukraine plot keeps emerging.
Just Thursday, Congress’ nonpartisan Government Accountability Office released a report concluding that Trump broke the law by withholding $391 million in U.S. military aid to Ukraine — a cash freeze Democrats say was instrumental in the president’s politically motivated pressure campaign on the European country.
Additionally, Lev Parnas, a former associate of Giuliani who helped him dig for political dirt in Ukraine, turned over a cache of records to the House Intelligence Committee that were released Tuesday and tied Trump even closer to the Ukraine scheme.
The fresh evidence has given Democrats new ammunition to push for subpoenas of withheld documents and witnesses, including John Bolton, the former White House national security adviser.
“In the coming days, each of us will face a choice about whether to begin this trial in search of the truth, or in service of President Trump’s desire to cover it up,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said Thursday. “Trials have witnesses and documents.”
