VA Reports Over 1,000 New Coronavirus Cases; 12 New Deaths

VIRGINIA — On Saturday, the Virginia Department of Health reported 1,078 additional cases of the COVID-19, the virus associated with the coronavirus and 12 more deaths. There are 43,611 cumulative cases, 1,370 deaths and 4,601 hospitalizations in the commonwealth.

After a mid-week increase in Virginia's number of currently hospitalized patients, Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association reported 1,471 pending or confirmed COVID-19 patients currently hospitalized, down from 1,524 on Friday and from 1,502 on Thursday. There have been 5,745 COVID-19 patients discharged from hospitals, up from 5,648 on Friday.

Numbers of pending or confirmed COVID-19 patients using ventilators or intensive care beds have declined. There are 372 pending or confirmed COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in the intensive care unit, down one case from Friday. The 194 COVID-19 patients using ventilators decreased by one since Friday. A total of 631 ventilators of 2,982 available at hospitals are in use, representing 21-percent use in Virginia. No hospitals are experiencing difficulty obtaining or restocking protective gear or other medical supplies in the next 72 hours.

The latest 7-day percent positivity rate for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests across Virginia is 13.0 percent, down from 13.4 percent on Friday. Northern Virginia's latest 7-day positivity rate for PCR tests is 12.3 percent on May 30. PCR tests determine active infection through respiratory samples and are counted alone and with antibody tests on the VDH website.

Northern Virginia accounts for 5o3 new cases on Friday. This includes 142 in Prince William County, 168 in Fairfax County, 100 in Loudoun County, 19 in Alexandria, 18 in Arlington County, 42 in Manassas, 12 in Manassas Park and two in Falls Church.

Here are the latest cumulative case updates for our coverage areas from Wednesday to Thursday:

  • Alexandria: 1,960 cases, 187 hospitalizations, 44 deaths; increase of 19 cases and six hospitalization.
  • Arlington County: 2,117 cases, 371 hospitalizations, 113 deaths; increase of 18 cases, one less hospitalization and two deaths
  • Fairfax County: 10,906 cases, 1,300 hospitalizations, 383 deaths; increase of 168 cases, 19 hospitalizations and five deaths
  • Fairfax City: 65 cases, eight hospitalizations, six deaths; two new cases.
  • Falls Church: 55 cases, 11 hospitalizations, eight deaths; no change.
  • Loudoun County: 2,429 cases, 162 hospitalizations, 62 deaths; increase of 100 cases and three hospitalizations.
  • Manassas: 1,046 cases, 63 hospitalizations, 10 deaths; increase of 42 cases; increase of one hospitalization.
  • Manassas Park: 299 cases, 29 hospitalizations, six deaths; increase of 12 cases.
  • Prince William County: 5,412 cases, 460 hospitalizations, 104 deaths; increase of 142 cases, 13 hospitalizations and three deaths.
  • Fredericksburg: 158 cases, 40 hospitalizations, no deaths; increase of 11 cases and 21 hospitalizations.
  • Spotsylvania County: 524 cases, 72 hospitalizations, seven deaths; increase of 24 cases and 32 hospitalizations.
  • Stafford County: 702 cases, 72 hospitalizations, four deaths; increase of 19 cases and one hospitalizations.
