Woman jumps from Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge; 2nd incident in 12 days

Update: The woman has died, according to police.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- A woman jumped from the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge Tuesday morning, according to police, marking the second time in 12 days someone leaped from the span.

She was initially listed in critical condition when she was pulled from the water, police said.

The incident was reported at 9:47 a.m. on the Brooklyn-bound upper level, sparking a large emergency response.

Preliminary information indicates that the 36-year-old woman abandoned her vehicle midspan and jumped off the bridge, according to a spokesman for the NYPD’s Deputy Commissioner of Public Information.

The NYPD Harbor Unit responded and police scuba divers rescued her from the water, according to preliminary information supplied by police.

She was transported to Staten Island University Hospital in Ocean Breeze, according to police and an FDNY spokesman.

Her current condition is not available from authorities.

Two Brooklyn-bound lanes were closed for a time during the emergency response. The lanes have since been reopened, according to an MTA spokesman.

The NYPD Harbor and Aviation Units responded.

A video posted on social media shows a red SUV parked on the upper level with emergency responders looking over the side. Commuters drive slowly past an ambulance and police vehicles.

Concern over jumpers from the Verrazzano has been an ongoing issue on Staten Island, with officials over the years calling for enhanced measures to prevent suicides.

City Councilman Steven Matteo (R-Mid-Island) has called for the installation of a physical barrier, such as a fence or netting, to deter would-be jumpers.

Earlier this month, a 35-year-old male died when he jumped from the bridge in an apparent suicide.

This is a developing story. Further information will be posted as it becomes available.
