Essex County Supermarkets With 'Senior Hours' In Coronavirus: MAP

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — Several grocery stores in Essex County have begun offering early morning hours for senior citizens as the new coronavirus spreads throughout New Jersey.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, adults 65 years or older have a higher risk of developing severe symptoms from COVID-19. (Watch video below)

Some grocery store chains in New Jersey have begun to offer special, early morning shopping hours to senior citizens and other at-risk populations. They include:

  • Stop & Shop - All Stop & Shop stores will open early to service their "most vulnerable" customers from 6 to 7:30 a.m. daily. During those hours, stores will welcome customers who are age 60 and over, as well as customers who may have weakened immune systems. (Learn more)
  • Whole Foods - All Whole Foods Market stores will service customers who are 60+ years old one hour before opening the store to the general public. (Learn more)
  • Kings Food Market - Stores are designating the first hour each day (from 7 to 8 a.m.) for seniors and immuno-compromised shoppers. (Learn more)
  • Acme Markets - Stores have reserved 7 to 9 a.m. from Monday to Friday as a time when senior citizens and other at-risk populations such as pregnant women or those with compromised immune systems can shop. (Learn more)
  • ShopRite - Some ShopRite locations, including stores in Newark, Belleville, Livingston, East Orange, West Orange, Nutley, Bloomfield and Millburn, are offering special shopping hours for our customers who are elderly or high-risk.
  • Walmart -From March 24 through April 28, Walmart stores will host an hour-long senior shopping event every Tuesday for customers aged 60 and older. This will start one hour before the store opens. Pharmacies and Vision Centers will also be open during this time. (Learn more)
