Gov. Newsom says California is sending excess ventilators to other hard-hit states

Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom said that his state is helping out other states during the coronavirus pandemic, including New York and New Jersey.

Newsom said the ventilators, a crucial resource for states dealing with an influx in hospitalizations, would begin being shipped out as soon as Tuesday night, according to CNN.

“One hundred going to New York, 100 going to New Jersey, 100 going to Illinois,” Newsom said Tuesday. He explained that California is “adequately resourced” because the state was able to purchase or refurbish enough equipment.

“The vice president was correct, ventilators are going to D.C., Delaware, ventilators are going to Maryland, and likely Nevada. So that was the determination. It was done through the collective wisdom of our partners at FEMA,” he said.

Newsom said that the decision was made “in collaboration with their expectation and needs of what is required of the moment on the ground.”

California has more than 17,000 cases of the coronavirus and at least 420 deaths, according to a count by the New York Times.
