Why #RIPEllen is trending on Twitter: Ellen DeGeneres death hoax goes viral

Social media watchdogs thought Ellen DeGeneres had danced her last dance after logging onto Twitter Monday night to discover that the hashtag #RIPEllen was trending.

Not to worry, E.D. isn’t dead — the tweets were reportedly in reference to rumors last week that “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” might get axed, which spawned a viral death hoax.

“Is Ellen dead or not?! Y’all confusing tf out of me #ripellen,” tweeted one distraught fan amid false reports the 62-year-old comic and talk show host had jumped off the roof of a house.

Other Twitterati mocked the “late” entertainer with fake obituaries featuring pics of DeGeneres’ various celebrity doppelgängers.

“#ripellen fly high, angle,” tweeted one Twitter wit on a pic of Jane Lynch’s character from “Glee.”

Another chucklehead captioned a pic of Justin Bieber with the same tagline — and correcting the spelling of angel.

One social media comedian posted a photo of actress Kathy Bates with the caption, “the last picture of her #ripellen.”

Another uploaded a pic of Katy Perry with the tag, “Im in shock, rest Ellen.”

Needless to say, the Emmy-winning entertainer has been feeling the heat of late with rumors swirling that her show was getting jettisoned amid falling ratings.

And while producers confirmed to The Post that wasn’t the case, DeGeneres doesn’t appear to be the talk-show darling she once was.

In March, comedian Kevin T. Porter launched a viral Twitter thread calling for anyone who encountered DeGeneres to respond with “insane” stories about “Ellen being mean.”

“A new staff member was told, ‘Every day she picks someone different to really hate. It’s not your fault, just suck it up for the day and she’ll be mean to someone else the next day.’ They didn’t believe it, but it ended up being entirely true,” TV writer Ben Siemon wrote in one response.

Most recently, crew members from the comedian’s show accused her of being rude to them during the coronavirus lockdown.
