Topline

Beyoncé and Adele will again face off for the Album Of The Year award at the 2023 Grammy Awards as nominations were announced Tuesday, with Beyoncé earning nine nods, more than any other artist, tying with husband Jay-Z as the most-nominated artists in Grammys history.

Key Facts

Beyoncé’s album Renaissance (Best Dance/Electronic Album) and its many songs were notably nominated in the dance and R&B categories, not pop, while Adele’s 30 was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album.

Adele and Beyoncé previously faced off in 2017 when Adele’s 25 beat Beyonce’s Lemonade for the Album Of The Year award.

Beyoncé has now earned 88 nominations throughout her career, tying with Jay-Z.

Taylor Swift was nominated for the 10 minute re-released version of her song “All Too Well,” it’s music video, the new song “I Bet You Think About Me,” and for her song “Carolina” from the movie Where The Crawdads Sing, but the re-release of her 2012 album Red was not nominated (Swift’s new record Midnights was released after the eligibility period for the 2023 awards).

Controversial comedians Dave Chappelle and Louis CK were nominated in the Comedy category.

Surprisingly, newcomer Gayle’s song “abcdefu” was nominated for song of the year, after finding major success on TikTok earlier this year.

Tangent

Some major stars were noticeably missing from Tuesday's nominations, and it’s not because the Grammys forgot about them. Silk Sonic—Anderson .Paak and Bruno Mars’ R&B duo—announced last month they did not submit themselves for consideration. Last year, their song “Leave The Door Open” won four awards, including Song and Record of the year, and it was largely expected their album An Evening With Silk Sonic would have received similar acclaim. “We’d be crazy to ask for anything more,” Mars said. Drake and The Weeknd also opted not to submit their eligible works.

Key Background

To be eligible for awards at the 2023 ceremony, music had to have been released between October 1, 2022 and September 30, 2023. Jon Batiste, who dominated last year’s nominations, won 2022’s Album of The Year for his work We Are. And Olivia Rodrigo took home the highly-coveted Best New Artist award. The 2022 ceremony had to be postponed and moved from Los Angeles to Las Vegas because of the winter’s intense Covid-19 wave.

What To Watch For

The 65th Grammy Awards will air live on February 5 on CBS at 8 p.m. ET.
