Austin Eubanks, a survivor of the 1999 Columbine school shooting, was found dead in his home on Saturday.
Routt County Coroner Robert Ryg confirmed that Eubanks, 37, died overnight at his home in Steamboat Springs, Colo.
There were no signs of foul play and an autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
Eubanks’ family said in a statement to local ABC affiliate KMGH that he “lost the battle with the very disease he fought so hard to help others face. Helping to build a community of support is what meant the most to Austin, and we plan to continue his work.”
He was 17 years old when the shooters entered the library where he was having lunch with friends. Eubanks was shot in the hand and knee and ended up becoming addicted to drugs after taking prescription medication during his recovery.
He spent years speaking to audiences across America about his struggle with addiction in the years following the shooting.
His death comes less than a month after the 20th anniversary of the mass shooting.
