Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes cleared from NFL concussion protocol

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes announced Friday that he is out of concussion protocol and expects to play in the AFC championship game Sunday against the Bills.

“I just got out of the protocol,” Mahomes told reporters. “The week has been a bunch of testing, a bunch of different things to make sure I’m good to go and there’s no lingering effects or anything like that.

“Everything’s been good and I went through what the three or four different doctors have said. Everything’s looked well and I’m out of it now.”

After taking a hit to the head on a running play during the Chiefs’ divisional-round win over the Browns last Sunday, Mahomes was sidelined and went into the league’s mandated concussion protocol.

Mahomes then took a majority of snaps in practice this week, despite participating in a limited capacity Wednesday and Thursday. The 2018 MVP said he’s not feeling any symptoms and is looking forward to joining his teammates this weekend as they chase back-to-back Super Bowl titles.

“You want to be out there, but you have to go through the protocol and do everything the right way,” said Mahomes, who is also dealing with a toe injury he suffered against Cleveland. “You have to look at it long-term as much as you look at it short-term, and talking to all the doctors and going through the testing, we have the belief there will be no lingering effects and I’ll be able to go out there and be myself and be who I am every single week.”
