The is the dramatic moment an Illinois man was rescued from icy Lake Michigan the morning after the coldest day of the year.

Video released by the Chicago Police Department on Sunday shows the 22-year-old male stumbling around the water unsteady on his feet around 7am Saturday, then he vanishes out of view.

In moments that occur outside of the lens, a jogger is believed to have spotted someone in the water and reappears on camera as they attempt to wave down passing drivers for help.

But when the joggers seems to be having no luck, they risk their own safety to cross the carriageway near the 600 block of N Lake Shore Drive and call in emergency workers.

The victim - whose face has been blurred out to conceal his identity - is seen frantically waving to get attention on the day where it was 19 degrees and the wind chill factor made it feel like 5 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

It's unclear whether passing drivers called 911 or the jogger got the attention first responders but soon after, a fire truck pulls up to the scene and SWAT officers dash across the snow-covered ground and over to the lake.

The duo remove their vests and drop to their bellies to pull the man out of the lake, meanwhile drivers emerge from Chicago Fire Department trucks but are not required to go into the cold water thanks to the quick response.

The CPD Marine Unit also pulls up on the roadside, taking the number of emergency responders to about a dozen.

Authorities are seen covering the man with a white sheet to help keep him warm.
