The Boulder County Coroner’s Office has identified Evelyn Kear, 17, of Boulder, as the girl who died in a two-vehicle crash Monday at the intersection of Cherryvale and South Boulder roads in the southeast Boulder area.
Kear was a Fairview High School junior, according to Randy Barber, a Boulder Valley School District spokesman. She was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which happened at about 4:10 p.m. Monday, according to Colorado State Patrol Trooper Gabriel Moltrer.
In a message sent to the Fairview High School community, Principal Dr. Scarlet Chopin acknowledged Kear was a student of the school and offered her condolences.
“It is with heartfelt sadness that I share news of the death of one of our students,” Chopin said, adding: “All of our thoughts are with Evelyn’s family at this time. As we work through the grief of losing a classmate, please take care of yourself and one another.”
Molter said the girl was traveling in her Jeep westbound on South Boulder Road, and the F-150 driver was stopped at the intersection waiting to turn left. The F-150 then attempted to complete its left turn when the girl in the Jeep disregarded a red traffic signal and entered the intersection.
The driver of the F-150 was identified as a 45-year-old man from Boulder. He was wearing a seatbelt and suffered minor injuries but did not go to the hospital, Moltrer said. He braked, but was unable to stop in time, and the front of the vehicle collided into the rear of the girl’s Jeep, according to Moltrer.
Upon impact, the Jeep rotated counterclockwise and overturned, striking its roof on a utility pole, according to Moltrer.
Chopin said the Boulder Valley School District Trauma Team has been activated and that school counselors would be available in the counseling center.
