A sweet treat served at McDonald’s in the Netherlands is landing at U.S. locations next month for a limited time and fast food fans are either freaking out or confused about what it is.
Meet the Stroopwafel McFlurry, made with vanilla soft serve mixed with a caramel swirl and packed with “authentic” chopped Dutch Daelmans Stroopwafel caramel waffle cookie pieces.
“Until a minute ago, if you’d asked me what Stroopwafel McFlurry referred to, I probably would have guessed ‘a minor character in the Naked Gun series,'” Olivier Knox, Chief Washington, D.C. correspondent for SiriusXM radio, tweeted.
Others were equally confused. Someone who goes by McEmployee on Twitter posted “I have know idea what it is but I saw we’re getting a new McFlurry called ‘Stroopwafel.’ #whatisthat.”
As fans of the thin, waffle-like sandwich cookie already know, a Stroopwafel is made by layering two circular baked dough pieces and stuffing them with a caramel syrup filling. They’re popular in the Netherlands.
Those who know and love the sweets were overjoyed at the news. “Finally the Stroopwafel McFlurry comes to the US,” one man wrote.
“OMG. A stroopwafel Mcflurry?! [Is] this what dreams are made of?,” another woman posted.
The dessert is one of four global menu items McDonald’s is bringing to participating U.S. eateries starting June 5 for a limited time.
“We know our U.S. customers are curious about McDonald’s international menu items,” Linda VanGosen, McDonald’s vice president of menu innovation, said in a statement Wednesday. “Because we are always innovating our menu, we are thrilled to leverage our global scale and offer popular flavors from around the world next month.”
The other three global additions debuting at U.S. locations across the country include the Grand McExtreme Bacon Burger from Spain (a quarter pound of beef topped with Applewood smoked bacon, smoky McBacon Sauce, Gouda cheese and slivered onions); the Tomato Mozzarella Chicken Sandwich from Canada (your choice of chicken topped with tomato & herb sauce, mozzarella, slivered onions, lettuce and tomatoes); and Cheesy Bacon Fries from Australia, returning after a previous limited-time run here.
