CALIFORNIA — Two California hospitals received an F grade for hospital safety, according to new fall 2019 ratings released Thursday by the Leapfrog Group. In that same analysis, 91 hospitals in the Golden State received an A grade, 63 got a B, 79 got a C, and 22 got a D.

The nonprofit group, which releases the safety ratings twice a year, found that of the more than 2,600 hospitals graded in the country, 33 percent earned an A grade, a 1 percent increase from the last round of safety grades, released in Spring 2019.

Grades range from A to F. The Leapfrog Group explains that its rating system is focused entirely on errors, accidents, injuries and infections. The hospital safety grades are released by the nonprofit group twice a year, in the spring and in the fall.

The group relies on a panel of experts to select the measures used in the methodology and to develop a scoring system. (You can read more about the letter grades here.)

San Leandro Hospital is one of five hospitals in the Alameda Health System. Patch reached out for comment on the Leapfrog report. The full response, "Alameda Health System (AHS) has adopted the Center for Medicare & Medicaid’s (CMS) evidence-based, federally regulated CMS Stars methodology to track and continuously improve its quality and safety performance. Since July 2018, San Leandro Hospital, has seen a marked reduction in hospital acquired infections, complications, and other patient safety metrics.

"While several private business entities have produced competing quality and safety scoring systems, one of which is Leapfrog Group, AHS is not a Leapfrog customer due to concerns raised regarding its methodology.

"Nevertheless, delivering quality patient care is our top priority. We continually review, access and reconsider processes and procedures to move us closer to providing the optimum patient experience and highest quality care."

Efforts to obtain a comment from Beverly Hospital were not successful.
