Calgary police say excessive speed is considered a factor in a fatal collision on Peigan Trail on Wednesday.
Emergency crews responded to Peigan Trail S.E. at 52 Street S.E. at around 4:15 p.m.
In a Thursday news release, the Calgary Police Service (CPS) said the driver of a westbound car passed a semi-trailer at a “high rate of speed” before braking “aggressively” and hitting a newer-model Honda CRV.
“After striking the CRV, the car began to rotate as it crossed the gravel-covered centre median onto the eastbound travel lane,” CPS said. “The car was struck on the right-hand side by an eastbound Jeep SUV.”
The driver of the car, a man in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the CRV, a man in his 50s, wasn’t injured.
The driver of the Jeep, a woman in her early 20s, suffered serious injuries.
“Neither alcohol nor drugs are considered factors in this collision,” CPS stated. “However, excessive speed on behalf of the car is considered a contributing factor.”
Officers closed a section of Peigan Trail between 36 and 52 streets S.E. for several hours while they investigated.
