Chicago Flights Canceled As 'Bomb Cyclone' Hits East Coast

Hundreds of flights were canceled Thursday morning as some airports closed amidst fierce storms.

CHICAGO, IL — Fierce winter storms clobbering the East Coast led to hundreds of flight cancellations in Chicago Thursday morning. O'Hare reported more than 240 flights canceled and more flights delayed, while Midway had more than 60 cancellations early Thursday, according to the Chicago Department of Aviation. In fact, O'Hare ranked seventh among airports with the most flights canceled on Thursday morning.

More flights could be delayed or canceled on Thursday as airport closings were reported in the eastern United States. Travelers were being warned to expect delays of 15 minutes or more as of late Thursday morning.

John F. Kennedy International Airport was closed Thursday just before 10 a.m., the Federal Aviation Administration announced. The airport was expected to reopen at 2 p.m., the FAA said. They urged travelers who are flying into and out of JFK to check with their airline about the status of their flight.

Flights at LaGuardia Airport were also temporarily suspended just before 11 a.m. Thursday, the airport said on Twitter, and more than 700 flights were canceled at Boston's Logan Airport canceled as the airport was "down well over 75 percent of operations today," MassPort Director Of Aviation Ed Freni told CBS Boston.

The airline-tracking site FlightAware reported more than 3,600 canceled flights in United States on Thursday morning.
