These New Wireless Headphones Are Designed With Heavy Metal Fans In Mind

This article is more than 2 years old.

I know that niche marketing is a “thing” right now, but I never thought I’d see the day when someone released a pair of headphones that are specifically designed for listening to heavy metal music. That’s the big idea behind HEAVYS, a new pair of headphones designed in conjunction with former Sennheiser tonmeister Alex Grell. Last week, I reviewed Axel Grell’s new Grell TWS/1 true wireless earbuds, and now HEAVYS is launching these new headphones on Kickstarter.

HEAVYS have four dynamic drivers in each earcup and they are strategically located and cover multiple frequency ranges so they can mimic the sound of listening to heavy metal through a big pair of loudspeakers. The tweeters in each earcup are sited perpendicular to the ear and this creates an authentic rock stadium surround sound effect. It sounds ideal for anyone who likes their music loud but who lives in an apartment, where playing music at ear-splitting volumes through loudspeakers might upset the neighbors.

The wireless function of the HEAVYS use a choice of codecs including AAC, aptX Adapative and LHDC. The lossless codecs can deliver the most accurate representation of the recording process possible. If wired listening is more your thing, the HEAVYS come with a USB-C to USB-C cable for digital tethering, plus there’s a short and long 3.5mm auxiliary cable for use with a smartphone or proper hi-fi.

HEAVYS also features something called Shredtech technology that preserves the integrity of the character and complexity of heavy metal music. These features are protected thanks to using low distortion drivers and splitting the frequency ranges across the four drivers to deliver a superior headphone listening experience that squeezes out every last drop of detail in the music.

Heavy Metal music is meant to be heard loud… very loud. HEAVYS headphones use a loudness enhancement technology based on a psychoacoustic model. This cunning approach makes music sound louder without producing the higher sound pressure levels that can damage hearing and without sacrificing a clean and natural sound.

A built-in SPL dosimeter technology protects the listener’s ears from fatigue and hearing loss, enabling heavy metal music to be heard louder and more safely. I haven’t been able to test that bold claim but it sounds like a great feature.

These headphones include ANC (active noise cancelation), comfortable memory foam earcups, wired and wireless listening options, a long battery life of up to 50 hours and two built-in microphones for taking phone calls between listening to tracks of Black Sabbath or Cradle of Filth.

Pricing & Availability: If heavy metal music is your bag and you fancy taking a punt on a pair of HEAVYS, you can find out more at kickstarter.com. Early birds can get a pair by pledging from $149 and the campaign has already raised more than $500,000 from over 3,000 backers.
