Capitola’s first wharf was built in the 1850s, almost 20 years before the name Capitola came into use for the town. Originally called Soquel Landing, it was used for shipping redwood lumber and other local goods. In this 1890 photo, the steamer Coos Bay takes on a load of paper from the Soquel paper mill. Although rebuilt several times, the present wharf is in the same location as the original. The Sentinel’s Focal Point photos and captions are provided courtesy of the Capitola Museum.
