Michigan Reports Fewer Than 500 New Coronavirus Cases Monday

The state also reported that five more people have died from the virus.

MICHIGAN — After reporting more than 1,000 new cases of the coronavirus Sunday, Michigan reported less than half that number on Monday.

State health officials in Michigan reported 488 new cases of the coronavirus Monday, bringing the statewide case total to 78,507. The state reported that five more people have died from the respiratory illness, bringing the state's coronavirus death toll to 6,154, according to data provided by the state.

Michigan had reported more than 1,000 new coronavirus cases on Sunday for the first time since May, but explained that the number of new cases was elevated due to a backlog of test results from days prior.

According to the World Health Organization, Michigan ranks 14th in the nation in total coronavirus cases. The website also ranks Michigan among the nation's Top 10 (seventh) in deaths attributed to the respiratory illness.

More than 4.3 million coronavirus cases have been reported in the U.S., according to the World Health Organization. Meanwhile, over 150,000 deaths in the nation have been attributed to the virus. Over 2.1 million people have recovered from the virus.

Around the world, more than 16.5 million cases of the coronavirus have been confirmed, according to the World Health Organization. The organization has also reported that more than 654,000 people have died worldwide from the virus, while over 10 million people have recovered from it.
