Mac Miller’s Music Streams Increased 970% Following Death

Following the death of Mac Miller on Friday, on-demand streams of his music in the U.S. climbed by 970 percent, according to Nielsen Music.

On Sept. 7, the hip-hop star’s catalog of songs earned 32.5 million streams (audio and video combined), up from 3.04 million on Sept. 6.

Miller’s top five most-streamed songs as a lead artist (in terms of on-demand streams) on Sept. 7 were: “Self Care” (3.34 million streams; up 824 percent from 362,000), “Donald Trump” (2.07 million; up 2,337 percent from 85,000), “Best Day Ever” (1.88 million; up 4,852 percent from 38,000), “Hurt Feelings” (1.63 million; up 608 percent from 230,000) and “Weekend” featuring Miguel (1.62 million; up 1,157 percent from 129,000).

“Donald Trump” was Miller’s first hit on the Billboard Hot 100, as it debuted on the list dated June 11, 2011, at No. 80. It eventually peaked at No. 75 the following January.

During Miller’s lifetime, he notched six entries on the Billboard 200 albums chart, starting with his EP On and On and Beyond in 2011, which peaked at No. 55. He followed it with five full-length sets, all of which made the top 10: Blue Slide Park (No. 1 in 2011), Watching Movies With the Sound Off (No. 3, 2013), GO:OD AM (No. 4, 2015), The Divine Feminine (No. 2, 2016) and Swimming (No. 3, 2018).

Following nearly a full tracking week after his death, it’s expected that Miller’s catalog of songs and albums could impact Billboard’s charts next week (dated Sept. 22, reflecting the sales and streaming tracking week of Sept. 7-13).
